iCloud Keychain to Now Store Credit Card Data [2023 Update]

Apple’s recent software update includes a new product called the iCloud Keychain. With the feature, consumers can save sensitive information in a secure online file. Specifically, Keychain will save passwords and credit card information for all of their Apple devices. The program also helps Internet users create safer passwords.  Given the new functionality allowing users to store credit card data and synchronize with the cloud, we thought this functionality would be of particular interest to our customers and blog readers.

Keychain Details 

The Keychain service operates on Safari in iOS as well as OS X Mavericks. Once it has helped a consumer select a secure password, it will store the information and synchronize it to the consumer’s iOS and Mac units.  The software upgrade also makes credit card processing easier for consumers as Keychain saves the user’s credit card number and expiration date. To abide by MasterCard and Visa regulations, the program is unable to store the Card Verification Value, or CVV, code.

As a result, consumers will still need to input this information manually. Users should keep in mind that the software can only operate in Safari on Mac. Therefore, users of Chrome or FireFox will need to use a different password storage provider. In addition, consumers must have the iOS 7 upgrade installed on their devices.

Installation Overview

While installing the OS X Mavericks upgrade, the system will automatically ask the user if he or she would like to establish iCloud Keychain. When the user approves the setup, the program will direct him or her through the security key creating and linking process. If consumers prefer to establish the program manually, then they can access Keychain through the iCloud settings screen on a Mac device. Once a user has accessed the program, he or she will need to enter the password information manually into the system for the Apple program to save it. Keep in mind that other devices can be added to the program. However, the system will require approval for each extra unit. Once Keychain receives authorization, it will automatically begin updating on that unit. If a user decides to remove Keychain from his or her device, then the cancelation procedure is easy to complete. To remove the program, just click on the settings option and turn off the “Approve with Security Code” feature. Users who change their mind can easily reactivate the program.

Now that card payments are a major force in the economy, a system had to be set up to move this “virtual” currency from customer to business. This system is the basis of interchange.

The evolution of how customers pay businesses has changed dramatically over the past half-century or so. Cash was king during the infancy of American Express, MasterCard, and Visa. But as their networks expanded and more and more consumers began to expect to be able to pay with plastic in stores, merchants felt the pressure of lost sales if they turned away customers with credit cards.

Interchange fees are payments for handling the transaction between a business bank account and the cardholder’s bank account. They cover the costs of converting the electronic transaction through a credit or debit card into funds in the merchant’s account. These fees also cover administrative services and fraud risk.

The card networks (Visa, MasterCard, Discover, and American Express) have developed intricate pricing models based off of criteria like brand, geography, card type, business type, and even transaction type. With all these variables it is easy to understand why there are hundreds of different interchange rates.

The original intent behind charging merchants interchange was to offset the risk that issuing banks took for any losses occurring from debt default by the cardholder. According to Visa “the primary role of interchange is to create the right balance of incentives between a cardholders’ financial institutions – which promote and issue Visa cards to consumers – and a merchants’ financial institutions – which enroll and process Visa transactions for merchants.” Or basically that it is a balance between what the businesses are willing to pay for the ability to accept cards and what the banks are willing to accept as far as risk of profit and loss.

Interchange In The Past

In the early 1970s interchange was just one rate. As more merchants in different industries began to accept credit cards and new card types and rewards were introduced new rates began to appear in the interchange charts. The goal of the card networks when determining what rates to establish has always been a balancing act between covering any losses banks may realize and keeping the cost to merchants low enough so that it is attractive from a financial standpoint to the business.

As interchange fees are set by individual card companies there is an ever-present need to adjust rates. These pressures include other card brands and new and emerging technology. Since banks have the freedom to choose what card type they issue to their customers, they will usually favor the choice that gives them the most profit, which keeps rates overall pretty competitive.

Legislation and legal costs can also factor into where rates are headed. Late in 2012, a judge ruled against Visa and MasterCard in a class action lawsuit brought against the card companies by retailers and other business associations. The retail merchants accused Visa and MasterCard of increasing swipe rates while there was no legislation to protect the businesses from high fees.

Previous to this litigation, the Federal government passed the Durbin Amendment that set a ceiling on what card brands could charge for certain debit transactions. This bill was designed to greatly lower the cost to merchants, and therefore consumers, when paying with a debit card. Lawmakers argued that the risk to banks was very low with this type of card and thus did not justify the high rate that businesses were paying.

While it seems that only banks and card companies love interchange rates, it is hard to envision the complex systems we have without some sort of cost associated. Interchange Settlement Given Preliminary OK

On Friday, the Judge presiding over the controversial Interchange Settlement case in Brooklyn, N.Y. gave preliminary approval to the settlement of credit card interchange litigation announced July 13. The Official Merchant Services Blog recently explained why the controversial Interchange settlement was being considered for preliminary approval, despite the backlash from merchants and large corporations. We also began talking about the possibility of ‘The Big Cash Comeback’ when the settlement was first announced, and later we discussed the opposition to the settlement.

U.S. District Judge John Gleeson indicated in late October that his cursory review showed that the settlement probably met the legal requirements for preliminary approval. He scheduled a hearing for Nov. 9 to get input from lawyers for the merchant plaintiffs and network and bank defendants. The judge said final approval requires a higher standard, and lawyers don’t expect final sign-off anytime before 2013. Opponents argued that the plan didn’t even meet the lower threshold for a preliminary approval.

The National Retail Federation, the leading retail-industry trade group and an outspoken foe of the agreement, quickly issued a statement saying it would “explore all legal options.” But the Electronic Payments Coalition, a lobbying group of card networks and banks, said it viewed Gleeson’s ruling “as further indication that this historic settlement is a fair and balanced resolution to the epic swipe-fee battle.”

The NRF’s Mallory Duncan said in a statement  that “retailers, their customers and competition would suffer irreparable harm if this one-sided deal is allowed to move forward. We will consult with our attorneys and act as soon as possible to correct this injustice.” The NRF is not a plaintiff in this case, and made no mention of which legal remedies it would pursue.

MasterCard Inc. general counsel Noah Hanft said in a statement that the settlement “was reached with the assistance of the court and was supported by the merchant class representing millions of large and small retailers, and prominent trade groups across the country.” MasterCard also said it remains confident that “the court will grant final approval in the coming months.”

Visa Inc. said “this settlement is a fair and reasonable compromise for all parties. It is the result of two years of negotiation between retailers, their legal counsel, the networks, financial institutions and two highly regarded mediators under the supervision of the court.”

Merchants and some trade associations sued Visa, MasterCard, and about a dozen banks in 2005 alleging credit card interchange is unfair under federal antitrust laws. With a trial set for September 2012, the parties reached a settlement that calls for the defendants to pay more than $6 billion in damages and temporarily lower credit interchange to the tune of $1.2 billion. The networks also are to grant relief from some of their rules, including an easing of restrictions on surcharging, and let merchants negotiate in groups in the interchange-setting process. In return, the merchants are to agree not to sue the networks over interchange and rules in the future.

Opponents said the plan would protect what they view as anti-competitive interchange practices from further challenges by merchants, even from merchants that don’t yet exist. Opponents also questioned the value of the new surcharging freedoms, noting that 10 states prohibit the practice. This settlement attempts to force a one-size-fits-all solution onto a wildly diverse group of merchants, which may be extremely unsuccessful.

While we have discussed this settlement from different aspects previously, noting the advantages it would seem to give the Issuing Banks over merchants, the settlement seems to be proceeding along without any further adjustment or negotiation. Although it is not finalized yet, the dissenter’s cries seem to be going unheard, as they believe that the settlement protects the status quo more than anything, and will not change the way the networks set interchange. Host Merchant Services will keep you informed of all the latest news involving this legal battle between the merchants and the card-issuing giants.
